Job Satisfaction Continues to Decline

The results of a survey released by The Conference Board on February 28 show that the number of American workers satisfied with their jobs has been on a steady decline over the past 10 years. Only one-half of American workers now report that they are satisfied with their jobs, down from nearly 60 percent in 1995.

Lynn Franco, Director of The Conference Board’s Consumer Research Center, said, “Rapid technological changes, rising productivity demands and changing employee expectations have all contributed to the decline in job satisfaction.”

Of the 50 percent who say they are content with their jobs, only 14 percent say they are “very satisfied.” The Conference Board reports that the decline in job satisfaction is widespread among all workers of all ages and across all income brackets.

The survey was conducted by TNS, a leading market information company. In a supplemental survey conducted by TNS in August 2004, the company found that 40 percent of workers feel disconnected from their employers and two out of every three workers do not identify with or feel motivated to drive their employer’s business goals and objectives.
